“…shows a strong command of the wind ensemble… a deep understanding in traditional wind band writing, as well as a fresh, new sound.”
Chase McCay (b. 2003) is an award-winning American composer whose music is animated by a visceral folk vitality. His work merges global rhythmic traditions with expansive symphonic architecture—a language currently explored through his research into the textures of Bulgarian folk music. Translating these ancient idioms into the modern wind ensemble and orchestra, Chase creates a sound world that is both emotionally resonant and technically rigorous.
His portfolio is anchored by early successes, including becoming the first freshman composer premiered by The University of Texas Symphony Orchestra (Euphoric Dawn) and completing his first symphony at age nineteen. These works have earned praise from conductors such as Farkhad Khudyev, who describes Chase’s music as “beautiful, honest, and alive.”
Chase’s creative output is supported by a robust professional practice as a music engraver. Viewing notation as a sacred contract between composer and performer, Chase dedicates himself to the "Art of the Score," facilitating high-profile performances for distinguished faculty and guest artists. Currently finishing his Bachelor of Music at The University of Texas at Austin under the private mentorship of Donald Grantham and Omar Thomas, Chase is establishing himself as a meticulously crafted voice in the next generation of American composers.
